On Monday, Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Alex Padilla, each D-California, despatched a letter to Council President Nury Martinez expressing their assist of the ordinance.

“This ordinance is a crucial effort to assist preserve unserialized and untraceable firearms, often called `ghost weapons,’ off our streets. Comparable initiatives have already been carried out in San Diego and San Francisco, and we commend the Los Angeles Metropolis Council for contemplating an identical measure,” the letter acknowledged.

Ghost weapons accounted for greater than 40% of weapons confiscated by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and one-third of crime weapons recovered by the Los Angeles Police Division in 2020.

“Ghost weapons are changing firearms folks would usually buy, with no background checks required,” based on the report.

Pitcher drew a connection between a rise in ghost weapons and a rise in crime, saying, “In 2021, the town has skilled 320 homicides, we’re up 15.9%, and when it comes to shootings, we’ve had 1,165 to date, which is a rise of 20%. So, I need to make the connectivity there as ghost weapons are being recovered extra incessantly.”

Between January and September, 14 ghost weapons have been recovered from murder scenes, 15 from robberies and 50 from assaults with lethal weapons, police stated.

Ghost weapons have been additionally used throughout a 2013 capturing at Santa Monica Faculty during which six folks, together with the shooter, died; throughout a sequence of shootings in Tehama County in 2017, during which 5 folks died; and within the 2019 capturing at Saugus Excessive College in 2019, during which three college students, together with the shooter, have been killed and three others have been injured.
